For more than 15 minutes, Andrew Mathew Stewart held his girlfriend Kim Grajeda at gunpoint in an upstairs bedroom in their house south of Riverside after having already shot her once in the shoulder. His father, Curt Stewart, begged him to drop the gun.Instead, Deputy District Attorney Jessica Roundy told jurors on Tuesday, June 13, Andrew Stewart dragged Grajeda by the hair into another bedroom. It was there that the 21-year-old Stewart, as Riverside County sheriff’s deputies entered the house and the couple’s infant son lay in a crib in another room, fired six more bullets into Grajeda in rapid succession, killing the 23-year-old and wounding his father as he tried to shield her.The slaying on June 1, 2019, ended a tumultuous relationship in which Stewart assaulted Grajeda and controlled her life, her mother said shortly after her daughter’s death, right down to the type of milk she drank.Roundy told jurors that Stewart previously hit a pregnant Grajeda with a baseball bat and onc...

Google must break up digital ad business over competition concerns, European regulators say

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:00:18 GMT

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union antitrust regulators took aim at Google’s lucrative digital advertising business in an unprecedented decision, saying Wednesday that the tech giant must sell off some of its ad business to address competition concerns. The European Commission, the bloc’s executive branch and top antitrust enforcer, said its preliminary view after an investigation is that “only the mandatory divestment by Google of part of its services” would satisfy the concerns. The 27-nation EU has led the global movement to crack down on Big Tech companies — including groundbreaking rules on artificial intelligence — but it has previously relied on issuing blockbuster fines, including three antitrust penalties for Google worth billions of euros (dollars). It’s the first time the bloc has told a tech giant that it must split up key parts of its business over violations of the EU’s strict antitrust laws, though details on what that would look like have not been...

ENSCHEDE, Netherlands (AP) — After a lackluster start to his stint as Spain coach, Luis de la Fuente arrives at the Final Four of the Nations League expecting to see an improved version of “La Roja.”De la Fuente, who replaced Luis Enrique after the World Cup in Qatar, is under pressure after Spain struggled in its first two matches under him in March. It needed two late goals in a hard-fought 3-0 win over a Norway team missing Erling Haaland to open its qualifying campaign for the 2024 European Championship, then lost 2-0 at Scotland.“Now we should be closer to what we expect,” De la Fuente said Wednesday, a day before Spain’s semifinal against Italy in the Netherlands. “The team is taking steps forward, little by little, I can see it every day in training.”He said players are becoming more used to his ideas and believes the squad has the potential to win the Nations League title.“We haven’t had a lot of time, but we will try to be up to the task,” De la Fuente said. “I think ...

Turkey’s Erdoğan plays down Sweden’s NATO hopes

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:00:18 GMT

Sweden has still not won Turkey’s support to join NATO ahead of the military alliance’s summit in Vilnius next month, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was quoted as saying on Wednesday.“Sweden’s expectations don’t mean we’ll follow them,” Erdoğan said during a trip to Azerbaijan, according to Bloomberg and Turkish media, referring to Stockholm’s hopes of becoming a NATO member before the Vilnius summit.Spurred by Russia’s war on Ukraine and the rising threat coming from Moscow, Sweden and Finland officially asked to join NATO last year, and later committed to joining the alliance together. But Sweden’s candidacy has not yet been approved — unlike its eastern neighbor’s. Turkey has been dragging its feet on signing off on its bid, citing concerns about Stockholm’s support for Kurdish groups which Ankara considers to be terrorist entities — including the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has a following in Sweden but is banned in Tu...

PMQs scorecard: Sunak and Starmer bicker about Boris as everyone melts

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:00:18 GMT

Prime minister’s questions: a shouty, jeery, very occasionally useful advert for British politics. Here’s what you need to know from today’s session in POLITICO’s weekly run-through.What they sparred about: It’s Boris Johnson’s world — we just live in it. Tory rows over the former prime minister’s blocked list of rewards for allies took center stage at this week’s PMQs — with both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer trying to show that they care about more important issues than whether Nadine Dorries gets to sit in the House of Lords. They both managed to talk about it loads regardless. What Westminster is on about: Starmer opened with the — not entirely unreasonable — question: With rising bills, food prices and mortgage rates across the U.K., why is the Tory Party “arguing about who gets a peerage?” Sunak — also not entirely unreasonably — pointed out that resignation honors lists have a long precedent and that Labour had its fair share of honors...

Two pitches. Two swings. Four runs. That equation added up to a loss for the Chicago White Sox.Starter Lance Lynn allowed two two-run homers in the first inning in a 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in front of 45,561 on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.“It’s kind of how it’s going right now,” Lynn said. “Two pitches cost you four runs in the first inning, and then after that it’s just a battle. You put your team in a hole early. All and all, my stuff feels pretty good. I have to figure out how to have productive outings because this isn’t going to work.”It was the third straight loss for the Sox, who dropped back to 10 games under .500 (29-39) and 5 1/2 games out of first in the American League Central.Lynn allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks in five-plus innings.“I know he gave up those four runs in the first inning, but I really thought he threw the ball good,” Sox manager Pedro Grif...

Rain pushed the Chicago Bears inside the Walter Payton Center for their first day of minicamp Tuesday in Lake Forest. The team is wrapping up its offseason program with two more practices scheduled Wednesday and Thursday. As head coach Matt Eberflus continues shaping his team in advance of training camp, here are four things we learned Tuesday at Halas Hall.1. Receiver Chase Claypool is dealing with “a few things” health-wise that are preventing him from practicing, Eberflus said.Yes, you read that correctly. “A few things.” As in plural. Claypool has been off the practice field the past three weeks with what was originally described as an unspecified soft-tissue injury. Now, per Eberflus, there is more than one thing to keep an eye on. And Claypool’s missed practice time is significant as he tries to take a big leap forward in his first full season with the Bears, develop/ing timing and building rapport with quarterback Justin Fields.“Training cam...
