Residents of Maine gather to pray and reflect, days after mass shooting left 18 people dead LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Church bells rang Sunday as Maine residents gathered at somber and sometimes joyful services to pray and support one another following a traumatic week in which a fellow Mainer gunned down 18 people in the worst mass killing in state history. The Rev. Daniel Greenleaf began services at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston with a moment of silence. Then, he told the congregation that it was good to be able to finally pray together after days of lockdown imposed while police searched for the 40-year-old gunman Robert Card. The body of Card was found Friday in a trailer at a recycling center in Lisbon Falls. Card died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, but it was unclear when, authorities said. Card is suspected of also injuring 13 people during the shooting rampage on Wednesday night in Lewiston.Several women wore black veils in the cavernous sanctuary, where a church official said they are raising funds to...

The FDA is warning parents to test their children after lead is found in WanaBana fruit puree pouches (CNN) — The US Food and Drug Administration is warning parents against buying a brand of fruit puree pouches for their children after the snacks were found to have high levels of lead, the agency said.Lead was found in WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches, which are sold nationally at multiple retailers, including Sam’s Club, Amazon and Dollar Tree, the FDA said.“Parents and caregivers of toddlers and young children who may have consumed WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches should contact their child’s healthcare provider about getting a blood test,” the FDA said.Lead is toxic to humans and exposure to the substance can lead to developmental delays in children. Symptoms of lead exposure include headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, anemia, muscle aches, irritability and fatigue, the agency said. The issue came to light when North Carolina state health officials began investigating four children with elevated blood lead levels and found that the WanaBa...

Alaska Airlines incident renews calls for FAA to address ‘decades overdue’ pilot mental health reform

Alaska Airlines incident renews calls for FAA to address ‘decades overdue’ pilot mental health reform (CNN) — Richard Wesmoreland says in the beginning, being an airline pilot was great. But the repeated, days-long stretches away from home — commuting back and forth between his home near Houston and regional carrier SkyWest’s crew based in Detroit — began to take a toll on his new marriage and himself.“The lifestyle was wearing on me mentally,” says Westmoreland, now 37. “I was in kind of a dark place.”So the flight attendant-turned-pilot chose to end his career on his terms, in a fear shared by many pilots that getting help for his depression would lead to the Federal Aviation Administration ending his career for him.Westmoreland is just one of countless professional pilots who are now calling on the FAA — which certifies that civilian pilots in the United States are healthy to fly — to take up what he calls “decades overdue” mental health reform. That chorus came to a head this week when Joseph D. Emerson of California was charged with trying to crash an Alaska Airlines fl...

MBTA being run by ‘adults’ at long last, advisory board head says It will take time for the MBTA’s general manager to correct the course of the beleaguered transportation network he’s been steering for most of a year, but at least there is finally an “adult” in charge, according to the head of the agency’s budget board.Brian Kane, the executive director of the T’s advisory board, said problems popping up across the system aren’t the kind of news he wants to hear, but at least MBTA General Manager Phil Eng seems to know what he’s doing.“Eng has been here six months,” he told WBZ. “I think folks are really starting to see a sea change. I mean, I, as someone who was inside the T, and plays very close attention to it, am starting to see things that I just haven’t seen in the last decade.”In the wake of revelations that the multi-billion dollar Green Line extension was opened despite previous MBTA officials knowing the tracks were too narrow for trains to move at full speed, Kane said that Eng has been the silver lining. The former New York...
