Mets Notebook: Jose Quintana eyeing return after All-Star break

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:22:15 GMT

SAN DIEGO — The Mets might have a good problem on their hands following the All-Star break with the return of left-hander Jose Quintana. The rotation the club envisioned when the roster was put together this winter will finally debut, but that leaves the club with the question of what to do with six starters.Typically, playing time tends to work itself out. Injuries and ineffectiveness often dictate decisions like this, but the Mets currently have five healthy starters and with Quintana scheduled to make his final two rehab starts over the next week, he could make his 2023 debut as soon as July 18, when the Mets host the Chicago White Sox. However, that’s assuming that Quintana takes the place of David Peterson in the rotation. The Mets will discuss the pitching plans further when they see how Quintana comes through his next two rehab outings, though all indicators are that he will be able to join the rotation following the break.Peterson has pitched well since his retur...

Nick Pivetta strikes out eight in relief as Red Sox top Athletics 7-3

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:22:15 GMT

Nick Pivetta may have been removed from the starting rotation in mid-May, but he’s proven invaluable as an innings-eater out of the bullpen, and Friday he delivered one of his strongest efforts yet.Pivetta threw five quality innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight. He entered the game in the third following opener Brennan Bernardino, by which point the offense had already erupted for five runs en route to a decisive 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.Since moving to the bullpen Pivetta has posted a 2.79 ERA in 14 relief appearances, a marked improvement from his ugly 6.30 ERA over his first eight starts. He’s also steadily increased his workload since injuries decimated the rotation, going 3.1 innings last week against Miami, four innings Sunday in Toronto and now five innings Friday.Even with only three healthy starters available, Red Sox manager Alex Cora was adamant afterwards that they have no plans to reinsert Pivetta into the ro...

Texas prepares to deploy Rio Grande buoys in governor’s latest effort to curb border crossings

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:22:15 GMT

EAGLE PASS, Texas (AP) — Texas began rolling out what is set to become a new floating barrier on the Rio Grande on Friday in the latest escalation of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s multibillion-dollar effort to secure the U.S. border with Mexico, which already has included bussing migrants to liberal states and authorizing the National Guard to make arrests. But even before the huge, orange buoys were unloaded from the trailers that hauled them to the border city of Eagle Pass, there were concerns over this part of Abbott’s unprecedented challenge to the federal government’s authority over immigration enforcement. Migrant advocates voiced concerns about drowning risks and environmentalists questioned the impact on the river.Dozens of the large spherical buoys were stacked on the beds of four tractor trailers in a grassy city park near the river on Friday morning.Setting up the barriers could take up to two weeks, according to Lt. Chris Olivarez, a spokesperson for the Texas Departmen...

Rockies’ Kyle Freeland “a bit concerned” over drop in fastball velocity

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:22:15 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — The velocity on Kyle Freeland’s fastball is down, of that there can be no doubt. To say that it’s an alarming trend would be saying too much, but it’s certainly been on the mind of the Rockies’ 30-year-old left-hander.“It’s a little bit concerning,” Freeland said Friday before the Rockies played the Giants at Oracle Park. “But you know that I’ve never been one to say that I can’t pitch without high velo. I’m still going to go out and use my mix of pitches to try and get outs. Obviously, velocity on your pitches is going to help with that because hitters aren’t going to be able to track the pitch as long.“But it’s not a massive concern, especially since I feel healthy. My body feels healthy and my arm feels healthy.”During his start in Houston on Tuesday,  Freeland’s four-seam fastball averaged 86.8 mph and his sinker averaged 86.9, continuing a recent trend of droppin...
